How Much Does an AI Chatbot for Your Online Store Cost? Real 2026 Pricing (and the Fees Nobody Mentions)

The real price bands for an ecommerce AI chatbot in 2026, the hidden fees that inflate your invoice, and the seven questions to ask before you sign.

The same conversation comes up in every meeting with an online store: “we want an AI chatbot, but we have no idea whether it’ll cost us €40 or €400 a month.” And that’s not the buyer’s fault. It’s the fault of an industry that advertises a headline price and then invoices for something else entirely.

Ask three vendors for a quote and you’ll get three different units of measurement. One charges per conversation, another per “resolution”, the third per unique monthly visitor. None of them is comparable to the other two, and none of them will tell you what you’ll pay in November when your traffic triples.

So let’s get to the point. This is how much an AI chatbot costs for an online store in 2026, using the real price bands in the market, the fees almost nobody shows on the pricing page, and the exact questions you should ask before you sign anything.

Quick answer: an AI chatbot for an online store costs €39-99/month at entry level and €120-300/month with real traffic. One-off plugins run €60-150, and a custom build runs €1,500-5,000.

Why the advertised price is almost never the final price

The underlying problem is that most of the market charges by consumption, and chat consumption depends on your traffic — the one thing you don’t control. A good sales month is also a good invoice month.

These are the four billing units you’ll run into, and what they actually mean:

  • Per conversation or per message. Every visitor who opens the chat burns credit. An ad campaign or a social media mention can double your bill without selling a single extra unit.
  • Per resolution. The enterprise model: €0.50 to €2 every time the bot resolves a query (Gorgias, Intercom and Zendesk all publish rates in that range). Sounds reasonable until you count how many queries it resolves in a month.
  • Per unique visitor. You pay for traffic, whether those people spoke to the bot or not.
  • Per user or agent. Inherited from classic helpdesk software: every person on your team with access adds to the bill.

On top of that sit the charges that don’t appear in the pricing table but do appear in the one- and two-star reviews: invoices two to three times higher than expected in peak months, double billing for the same case (the support ticket on one side, the AI resolution on the other), and — worst of all — bots that stop responding when the credits run out. In other words: the month you sell the most is the month your assistant goes silent.

Real AI chatbot pricing in 2026, tier by tier

Using the public rates of the sector’s main players, the market sorts itself into four fairly clear tiers.

Entry level with working AI: €39-99/month

Tools that genuinely use a language model rather than a decision tree. Enough to answer FAQs and opening hours. Usual limitation: they don’t know your real catalogue, or they know it badly.

Mid range with real traffic: €120-300/month

This is where most stores with volume end up, even though they signed up for the €49 plan. It’s the effective price once the conversation counters do their job.

Assistants that actually sell: €99-299/month

The ones that show product cards with price, photo and a buy button. This is the category that genuinely moves conversion… and almost all of it runs on Shopify only.

One-off plugin: €60-150

Typical of PrestaShop. You pay once and you’re done, but you supply your own OpenAI API key (usage is billed separately by the model provider), there’s no dashboard, no support, and maintenance is on you.

Seven questions to ask before you sign

Ask for the answers in writing. A vendor who won’t answer them clearly is telling you something:

  1. What happens when I hit the limit? Does the bot shut down, do you auto-charge an overage, or do you warn me? The difference between those three answers is hundreds of euros and a silent storefront on Black Friday.
  2. What did a customer with my traffic actually pay last month? Not the list price — the real invoice.
  3. Does the bot know my catalogue with final prices? If tax isn’t applied, the visitor sees one price and the cart shows another.
  4. Does it work on my platform? Ask explicitly if you’re on PrestaShop or WooCommerce: a large share of sales assistants are Shopify-exclusive.
  5. How often does the catalogue sync? A bot recommending discontinued products creates more tickets than it prevents.
  6. Is there a lock-in period, and how do I cancel? “Cancelling is difficult” is one of the most repeated complaints in this sector.
  7. What does it do when it doesn’t know? It should admit it and hand over to a human, not improvise. A bot that invents a price creates a commercial and a legal problem.

When is it worth paying for?

Not every store needs an AI assistant. These are the practical criteria we use before selling anyone anything:

  • You get at least a few hundred visits a month and have a catalogue of reasonable size. With twenty products and low traffic, a good FAQ page performs just as well and costs nothing.
  • You get the same questions over and over (delivery times, availability, “which one do you recommend for X?”). That’s where the return is immediate.
  • You lose sales outside business hours. 70.19% of ecommerce carts are abandoned (Baymard Institute, 2025), and a good share of that comes down to questions nobody answers in the moment.
  • Your average order value justifies the fee. If the assistant closes two or three orders a month that would otherwise have been lost, it has already paid for itself.

And the reverse: if your traffic is highly seasonal, run from any usage-based pricing. That’s precisely the scenario where the bill spikes exactly when you’re busiest.

Where we stand: flat rate, no counters

We built our AI shopping assistant for online stores precisely because we saw the industry’s billing model as the main problem, not a footnote. Our prices are public and fixed: €49/month for the website assistant, €99/month with your store catalogue connected, and €149/month adding indexed manuals and documentation (plus VAT, €150 setup, no lock-in).

No conversation counter, no per-resolution charge, and the assistant doesn’t go dark halfway through the month. It works on PrestaShop, WooCommerce and Shopify, shows product cards with the final price from your catalogue, and when it doesn’t know something it says so and offers a human. If you want the underlying distinction between this and a scripted bot, we cover it in enterprise AI agents versus chatbots.

Frequently asked questions

How much does an AI chatbot cost for a small store?

Between €39 and €99/month at the market’s entry level, or €60-150 as a one-off if you go for a plugin and take on the API key and the maintenance yourself. At low traffic, the real difference between options isn’t price — it’s whether the bot knows your catalogue.

Why is my chatbot invoice higher than the plan I signed up for?

Almost always because the plan includes a capped number of conversations, messages, resolutions or visitors, and the overage is billed separately. It’s behind most complaints in this sector, with invoices running two to three times higher than expected in high-traffic months.

Is a one-off plugin cheaper than a monthly subscription?

In the first year it usually works out cheaper, but you pay the API usage separately and it includes no dashboard, no support and no updates. If the plugin breaks after a store update, that fix is on you too.

Are there AI chatbots that work well on PrestaShop?

Yes, though the offering is much thinner than on Shopify: most sales assistants are Shopify-exclusive, and on PrestaShop you’re left with one-off plugins or managed services that connect your catalogue through a product feed.

How long does it take to pay for itself?

It depends on your average order value. At €99/month with a €50 order value, two or three recovered orders a month cover it. Set a conversion baseline before installing it so you can actually measure the difference.
